Billings, John S. (John Shaw), 1838-1913

Typescript notes about data in various libraries and repositories relating to the history of the National Library of Medicine, including its predecessors. Much of the material pertains to the period when John Shaw Billings was librarian.

Frank Rogers was director of the NLM from 1949 until 1963 and was largely responsible for the NLM achieving national status. Primarily correspondence, this collection highlights Rogers' early work at the NLM and for medical librarianship.

Primarily consists of Billings' correspondence during his time as head of the Library of the Surgeon General (1868-1895). Also includes some biographical information, a collection of Billings' reprints, speech texts, scrapbooks, and clippings.

When John Shaw Billings left the Army in 1895 to become first a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and shortly thereafter the director of the New York Public Library, he took with him many of his personal and professional papers.
