Series 4: Surgery Records, 1940-1996 (bulk 1941-1966)

 Series

Scope and Contents

Records of the many surgeries performed by Swan and his communications with his patients are located in this series. These records include operative summary reports, correspondence, case histories, consultation reports, autopsy reports, radiographic findings, EKG readings, clippings, photographs, and x-rays. The surgeries span from his Boston internship in 1940 through his WWII army service to his association with the University of Colorado. Many... patients continued to correspond with Swan long after their surgeries; this doctor/patient correspondence is included with their medical records. The series is divided into two sub-series: Operative Records and Private Patients. Operative Records consists of lists of patients and their surgeries followed by alphabetical folder ranges of operative summaries and other records. Private Patients consists of individual patient files that are arranged alphabetically by last name, then numerically. Four "Army Surgical Records" folders are listed first in the series, although researchers should note that additional army patients are interfiled among the Operative Records sub-series.

This entire series is restricted by HMD's Access to Health Information of Individuals policy.
