Series 6: Writings, 1935-1995 (bulk 1953-1974)

The Writings series contains published and draft material authored or co-authored by Swan. There are two sub-series: Reprints and Books. Filed first in the Reprints sub-series is a numbered bibliography of Swan's publications, which include journal articles, book chapters, editorials, abstracts, reports, and letters to the editor. Hypothermia, arterial grafts, septal defects, surgical training, and other circulation and open heart surgery issues are among the topics covered in these writings. Swan's publications are arranged chronologically by publication date, with reprint requests and miscellaneous professional slides filed at the end. Many folders include drafts and illustrations as well as the final articles. Researchers should note that not all of the writings from the bibliography are present in the collection and several publications not listed in the bibliography are included in the collection. The Books sub-series consists of various drafts and illustrations for Swan's published book Thermoregulation and Bioenergetics, as well as correspondence, background research, and manuscript drafts for two proposed books on heart surgery and the history of experimental surgical laboratories that Swan never published. Materials for each book are arranged chronologically by folder date.
