This series contains correspondence, notes, publications, and reports documenting Cummings position as Director Emeritus. Promptly after his retirement (September 30, 1982) from the Library he assumed new duties under the title of Director Emeritus, particularly the organization and classification of the John Shaw Billings papers. His research of the John Shaw Billing papers resulted in various speeches and publications which can be found in Series VI: Speeches and the publications can be found in Series X: Publications. In addition, he was assigned to assist the Library's International Program activities as required in the absence of Dr. Corning who retired on August 31, 1983. Cummings later served as a consultant in library and information services, particularly CLIR, and was an active member of the friends of the National Library of Medicine. The series is arranged alphabetically.
