Series 6: Committee on Survey and Statistics (COMSAS)

 Series

Scope and Contents

The correspondence (1972-73)of the Committee on Survey and Statistics(COMSAS)originated from the Board Liaison Charles Sargent. Doris Bolef, Chair of the Committee, makes up most of the material in the series. Peter Stangl and Nelson Gilman, the Board Liaison, also contributed. The Survey of Surveys reviewed all previous survey work on medical libraries. The Committee polled the BMLA, ERIC, federal sources, and regional groups for information on completed surveys. The committee's results were compiled into a bibliography and indexed. The committee maintained files of the survey instruments and reports uncovered in their search. The surveys remaining with the committee files are identified by bibliography/index number. Surveys numbered before #76 have not been found. In 1976 the Health Sciences Libraries Survey Committee merged with COMSAS. The Rees/Crawford directory of Health Science Libraries was an important duty of the committee after the merger. The files of Board Liaisons Nelson Gilman, Erika Love, and Lucretia McClure have been interfiled with the Committee Chair's files (when available) or organzied as committee correspodence. Ching-chih Chen's files, a member of the committee, have been interfiled with the committee correspondence. COMSAS reviewed survey proposals from MLA member committees, hence survey instruments from a broad spectrum of MLA committees, including the MLA News reader survey, salary surveys, etc. are included. In 1983 COMSAS dissolved. No other committee has assumed its duties.
