Series 4: Humana Heart Institute International, 1981-1993 (Bulk 1984-1988)

 Series

Scope and Contents

In mid-1984, DeVries joined Allan Lansing's team at the Humana Heart Institute International (HHII) as a Physician Consultant in Cardiovascular Surgery. He continued his total artificial heart (TAH) research at this institute until his resignation in 1988 to begin his own private practice. Series 3 documents DeVries's continuing efforts to perform a successful total artificial heart implant at the HHII. There are four sub-series: TAH Program Procedural Documents, Artificial Heart Patients, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and General Administration. The TAH Program Procedural Documents sub-series consists of meeting minutes, protocols, policy documents, and reports that dictate how the artificial heart program was supposed to run. The Artificial Heart Patients sub-series contains correspondence, operative reports, x-rays, notes, data printouts, and timelines regarding prospective and actual TAH patients, including three TAH recipients that were the source of much media attention: William Schroeder, Murray Haydon, and Jack Burcham. The third sub-series documents how the FDA was kept apprised of the TAH Program's progress through quarterly reports, correspondence, and Q and As. The General Administration sub-series includes correspondence, reports, information packets, and other material related to the HHII in general and the artificial heart program in particular. Some of the correspondence was created after DeVries's formal resignation from the HHII. Folders within each sub-series are arranged chronologically by folder date.

Portions of this series are restricted in accordance with HMD's Access to Health Information of Individuals policy. The Schroeder, Haydon, and Burcham material is not restricted due to widespread public knowledge of these patients' conditions and deaths.
