Series 8: Photographic Images, 1969-1995, undated

The Photographic Images series contains slides, photographs, contact sheets, and negatives that mostly illustrate DeVries's professional work and interests. There are five sub-series: Patients and Surgeries, Devices, Health Conditions, Illustrations, and Other. The Patients and Surgeries sub-series chronicles the total artificial heart implants that DeVries and his team performed in animals and humans. The human subjects covered include DeVries's four most famous patients: Barney Clark (BC), Jack Burcham (JB), Murray Haydon (MN), and William Schroeder (WS). Their folders contain photographs of each patient taken before, during, and after surgery along with autopsy photographs, x-rays, MRIs, statistical charts, and data graphs. The Devices sub-series gathers together presentation slides and assorted images of medical equipment and mechanical heart components. The Health Conditions sub-series consists of assorted presentation slides covering a variety of health ailments. Slides of images that were selected for inclusion in publications can be found in the Illustrations sub-series. All remaining slides, photographs, and contact sheets have been placed in the Other sub-series; they cover such topics as the Schroeder funeral, hospital construction and staff, and various untitled presentations. Publicity and candid shots of DeVries are also located in this sub-series. Folders within each sub-series are arranged alphabetically by folder title.

Portions of this series are restricted in accordance with HMD's Access to Health Information of Individuals policy. The Clark, Schroeder, Haydon, and Burcham material is not restricted due to widespread public knowledge of these patients' conditions and deaths.
