Series 9: Audiovisual Materials, 1982-2000 (Bulk 1982-1987)

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series consists mostly of VHS tapes and U-matic tapes (along with some audiocassettes and 35 mm films) that document DeVries's total artificial heart work and the vast media coverage that it generated. It includes original footage of the operations on Barney Clark, Murray Haydon, and William Schroeder as well other diagnostic footage, press conference appearances, lectures, and appearance on many types of television shows. Several cassettes and tapes are unlabeled and a few are fragmentary in nature. There are two sub-series: Audio Recordings and Video Recordings. The Audio Recordings are further divided into Conferences and Lectures/Interviews, each arranged chronologically. Conferences consists mostly of sessions from the First (1985) and Second (1986) International Humana Heart Conference on Cardiac Replacement as well as the 1986 Proceedings of the International Symposium on Artificial Organs, Biomedical Engineering, and Transplantation. Lectures/Interviews consist of a small number of lectures and interviews given by DeVries. The Video Recordings are further divided into Individual Talks, Media Coverage, Operational/Diagnostic/Training Footage, and Other Footage, each arranged chronologically. Individual Talks/Interviews consists of interviews and panel discussions of various artificial heart surgery topics. Media Coverage documents the reporting about the Clark, Schroeder, and Haydon operations. In addition to straightforward newscasts, it captures DeVries's work and its medical and ethical implications in popular culture from panel discussions with other scientific "pioneers" (CBS News' "Nightwatch") to game shows ("I've Got A Secret"). Operation/Diagnostic/Training Footage consists of operation footage of the Clark, Schroeder, and Haydon surgeries as well as training films on monitoring the equipment and other similar surgical techniques. Other Footage consists of a few videotapes of events that celebrated DeVries personally rather than professionally.

The films (all of which are in Operation/Diagnostic/Training Footage) have been rehoused in archival canisters, assigned item numbers, and stored separately from the rest of the collection.
