This article was the first in a series of papers by Axelrod on the role played in the body by sympathetic amines, a broad class of chemicals that mimic the actions of the sympathetic nervous system and have an amine basic structure. Through a variety of tests on several animals, Axelrod found two primary processes, demethylation and hydroxylation, that metabolically transformed ephedrine.
