Historical Note

The U.S. Interdepartmental Social Hygiene Board was established under the Chamberlain-Kahn Act of July 9, 1918, to allocate funding to universities, associations, and States for the control, prevention, and treatment of venereal diseases in response to the alleged war-time escalation of the diseases. The board was terminated in 1923.
