Historical Note

Index Medicus was initiated by the Surgeon General's Library in 1879. In 1916 Dr. George H. Simmons inaugurated the Quarterly Cumulative Index, which was published by the American Medical Association and which was oriented along the lines of Index Medicus but was published more frequently. In 1926 the Index Medicus merged its publication with the Quarterly Cumulative Index to form the Quarterly Cumulative Index Medicus. Morris Fishbein, who was editor... of the Journal of the American Medical Association, edited the new publication.
