Biographical Note

Harry Gilchrist began his Army career as a contract surgeon in 1898. He joined the Army Medical Corps in 1900 and rose to the rank of Major General. He spent several years in the Philippines, Central America, and Cuba fighting plague, cholera and typhoid outbreaks. Gilchrist was a member of the first contingent of American troops in Europe during World War I. He worked in the Army's Chemical Warfare Service from 1917 until his retirement as Chief of the Medical Division in 1934.
