Biographical Note

Earl B. McKinley, 1894-1938, was Professor of Bacteriology and Dean of George Washington University School of Medicine. Colonel Bailey K. Ashford, 1873-1934, graduate from Georgetown University Medical School in 1896. He then entered on a career in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. While stationed in Puerto Rico, Ashford was the first to describe and successfully treat North American hookworm in 1899. He was a founding member of the Puerto Rico Anemia Commission in 1904 and a founder of the School of Tropical Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico. The Walter Reed Army Medical Center presents the annual Bailey K. Ashford Clinical and Laboratory Research Award in his honor.
