Biographical/Historical Note

Born in Maryland, Leonard McPhail became an assistant surgeon for the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1834. He was stationed at Fort Jackson (at New Orleans). In 1835 he was assigned to the regiment of dragoons at Fort Gibson in the Oklahoma Territory, also then termed 'Indian Territory.' McPhail also served in field hospitals during the Mexican War, 1846-48.
