Historical Note
A social, non-scientific club formed for the purpose of furthering the social intercourse of its members and promoting the advancement of medical and surgical knowledge, the Eclat Club was first conceived in France shortly after the Armistice in November 1919. Charles Mixter, Harry Kerr, and Burton J. Lee wanted to establish an association of surgeons who had served the army in France. The proponents felt that to include all the surgeons who had served would make the club too large to have any usefulness to its members. Therefore, they chose for the club a select group of men "about whose desirability there could be no doubt." The club's organizational meeting was held in New York on October 23, 1919.
