Biographical/Historical Note

Born in Alliance, Ohio, James Lee Goddard earned his M.D. at George Washington University in 1949 and a Masters in Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health in 1955. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon General of USPHS and Chief of Atlanta's Communicable Disease Center in 1962. On January 17, 1966, President Johnson appointed him Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. He served as Commissioner until July 1, 1968.
