Biographical Note

Considered a leader in forming the Army Medical Department into a staff corps, John Van Rensslaer Hoff was born in Mt. Morris, NY and received his medical education at Albany Medical College of Union University in 1871 and College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York in 1874. He joined the army as a general surgeon in 1874. Hoff remained in the Army Medical Service until his retirement in 1912 as a colonel. He was an active member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States and, after his retirement, was editor of Military Surgeon.
