Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph J. Woodward (1833-84) was a surgeon in U.S. Army Medical Department. He is considered a pioneer in the field of microscopic photography. Woodward was among the surgeons attending President James Garfield after he was shot by Charles Guiteau.

Includes a manuscript, "Memorandum to be added to the record of the postmortem examination of the late President J. A. Garfield, Washington, D. C., Sept. 24, 1884" (2 p.), signed by J. J. Woodward and Daniel S. Lamb.
