Collection Summary

Consists of a wide variety of receipts, letters, notes, memos, certificates, postcards, and business cards bearing the autographs of significant figures in the history of medicine, the NLM, and from U.S. history.

The collection's bulk originates with the distribution of John Shaw Billings' Index Catalogue and the personal contacts with scientists and physicians which were cultivated in the process. There are many receipts returned verifying delivery of annual versions of the Index Catalogue dating from the 1880s through 1905. Most items predating 1860 were acquired through donation or purchase.
