*Sex and the professional (HF6656), 1975

 Item — Box: 7

Scope and Contents

Produced by Herman J. Engel and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

This program establishes the concept that a health professional should be conscious of his own sexuality and how he handles his problems before he adequately and nonemotionally counsels his patients in their sexual problems. The program also points out that the medical students' sexual problems, hang-ups and fears are natural during his educational experience and as long as he realizes this, he can still be an effective counselor. This program presents an orderly progression of the medical student as a sexual being. The medical student learns about the physiology of sexuality; the health professional must realize that patients may have sexual problems; the patient in the hospital is still a sexual being; the health professional may fall into the trap of relating his own sexual mores to that of the patient. To be effective, the health professional must realize that everyone is a sexual being and must be tolerant of his own and his patients' attitudes.
