Biographical Note

Jacob N. (Jay) Shanberge, M.D., a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, graduated from Marquette University's School of Medicine in 1944. After serving as a lieutenant in the army, he became a chief resident in pathology at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. A hemato-pathologist and coagulationist, he was awarded a National Institutes of Health Fellowship in Zurich, Switzerland, early in his career, and published more than 50 medical research articles....

From 1969 to 1980 he was the director of pathology and laboratory medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Milwaukee. While there, in 1974, he helped found the Great Lakes Hemophilia Foundation. He was an avid football fan and a jazz pianist why who partially funded his college and medical school education playing in Dixieland jazz bands in Milwaukee clubs. His extensively-researched and annotated medical stamp collection was a lifelong passion for Dr. Shanberge, who died in 2004.

The collection includes stamps issued by nations, principalities, protectorates, and other geopolitical entities, as well as organizations such... as the United Nations. The collection includes many entities not currently recognized either because they have merged with others or been divided into independent entities. Subjects of the stamps include medicinal plants, medical specialties, scientists, physicians, saints, royalty, disease, disability, public health organizations, children's health, military medicine, and many other topics.
