The collection contains interviews with former directors and other individuals significant to the foundation and early history of the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Eli A. Rubenstein conducted the interviews between the years 1975-1978 as background for an intended book about the institute. Ultimately the book was not completed and in 1989 the interview collection was given to the NIMH and was later donated to NLM.

Many of the transcripts also contain the individual's curriculum vitae and some also contain associated material, such as articles or conference papers, the interviewee felt pertinent to the subjects discussed during the interview.
