Description

Throughout the 1980s, Freis felt compelled to defend the use of diuretics for use as an antihypertensive agent. Some researchers believed that diuretic-induced hypokalemia might bring about fatal arrhythmias, others felt that long-term use encouraged high cholesterol, and thus posed a risk of coronary artery disease. In this article, Freis and Papademetriou concluded that the accumulated evidence does not support the conclusion that thiazide diuretics... increased cardiovascular risk.
