The Big Mental Hospital Is Obsolete

Gorman argued that huge mental hospitals had never been cost-effective or good for patients, and the advent of new tranquilizing drugs would make them even less defensible. He urged legislators at a public hearing of the New York State Committee on Public Health to abandon their outdated thinking about mental health problems and explore new alternatives.
