Hollerith made a significant contribution to the development of the modern electronic computer with his Hollerith Electric Tabulating System, an electronic punchcard system he developed while working for the Census Bureau. He was especially inlfuenced by John Shaw Billings, then head of Vital Statistics for the Census Bureau. Virginia Hollerith is the daughter of Herman Hollerith.
