Scope and content

Two copies of the report, one a draft, the other a fair copy and ca. 40 pages of tables and case histories, a cholera passport allowing access to hospitals in various regions and two maps, all loosely inserted in two large paper folio wrappers that contain tables entitled "Etet des malades tant civiles que militares dans les hospitaus et dans les maisons particulières de Varsovie (affectés de cholera)." The area covered generally includes a strip of Poland between Kracow, Warsaw and Riga.

Biographical / Historical

Chamberet was born in Limoges, France in 1779 and was a distinguished military surgeon. He studied in Limogenes and Paris, where he won the the prize for clinical internship. He accompanied French armies in Italy and Spain and was present at the Battle of Waterloo. He became chief medical officer of Val de Grâce. In 1831 he was included in the party of French doctors sent to Poland to study the cholera epidemic and prevent its spread. His report was later published in the "Mèmoires de médicine, de chirugie et de pharmicie militaire" and as a monograph in 1832.
