Historical Note

The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission began as a subsidiary of the National League for Nursing (NLN). The NLN originated as the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses in 1893, changing to the National League for Nursing Education in 1912. When it combined with the National Organization for Public Health Nursing and the Association for Collegiate Schools of Nursing in 1952, its title changed to the National League for Nursing.

The NLN Accrediting Commission formally separated itself from the NLN in 1997 in compliance with Department of Education requirements. To retain its abilities to offer student financial aid, the Accrediting Commission legally severed any relationship to NLN in 2012. In May, 2013 it changed its name to the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

Collection Summary

Collection consists primarily of agendas and minutes from board of directors, committee, and review panel meetings (1949-1996); reports generated by NLN, committees, and review panels (1939-1997); and NLN publications and accreditation-related references (1937-1994). A few lists and compiled data identify NLN members who participated as site visitors (1964-1993). A small segment of the collection holds information provided by NLN to the Department of Education and the Council on Post-secondary Education (1989-1992) in support of maintaining continued official recognition of NLN's accreditation authority.

Series 1 (1950-1994) holds mostly meeting agendas for the wide variety of committee and boards that do the NLN's accrediting work, augmented by some files containing information provided to meeting members for their consideration in advance of meetings. Series 2 (1949-1996) consists solely of minutes of meetings, many of whose agendas are in Series 1. Series 3 (1939-1997) represents reports of two primary types: those generated by various committees and councils, varying from specific topics to annual organizational summaries; and extensive files from a handful of nursing schools covering several decades' worth of accreditation evaluation data. Series 4 (1964-1993) consists of site visitor roster lists and information collected by field inspectors tasked with making site visits to organizations seeking accreditation. Series 5 (1989-1992) contains information provided by NLN to the Department of Education and the Council on Post-secondary Education about both its own authority to be an accrediting body and its own accrediting processes. Series 6 Publications (1937-1994) is organized into two subseries. The first is a call-numbered series of books and pamphlets addressing nursing school curricula and accreditation principles which may have served as and NLN's administrative reference collection. The second is a chronologically-sorted collection of NLN publications which offer guidance to schools seeking accreditation and to NLN site visitors is followed by a comprehensive set of newsletters covering a 25-year period.
