Biographical / Historical

Born on March 2, 1941 in Anniston, Alabama, David Satcher spent his early career as an educational administrator and teacher. After graduation from Morehouse College, he earned his MD and PHD at Case Western Reserve University in 1970. In 1979, after serving four years as interim dean of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School, Dr. Satcher joined Morehouse School of Medicine as professor and chairman of the Department of Community Medicine... and Family Practice. Beginning in 1982 he directed the Meharry Medical College, moving in 1993 to the directorship of the Centers for Disease Control. He assumed the role of both Assistant Secretary for Health and Surgeon General of the United States on February 12, 1998. He relinquished his secretaryship in January, 2001. He stepped down as Surgeon General on February 12, 2002.
