Historical Note
The National Advisory Mental Health Council (NAMHC) was established in 1946 by the National Mental Health Act to advise the newly formed National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) on its policies and activities. The council met three times a year, most often in February, May, and December. Generally, the Surgeon General presided over the meetings, and the NIH director or deputy director were in attendance. The three main committees, Community Service, Research, and Training, presented specific program recommendations as well as funding allocations at each meeting.
Currently, NAMHC advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Director, National Institutes of Health, and the Director, National Institute of Mental Health, on all policies and activities relating to the conduct and support of mental health research, research training, and other programs of the Institute.
Collection Summary
Collection includes administrative materials and meeting minutes of the National Advisory Mental Health Council (NAMHC) from 1947-1960.
Series 1: Administration includes a NAMHC digest of organizational proceedings, drafts of NIMH program policy manuals as well as membership and mailing lists. Materials are dated from 1948-1950.
Series 2: Meetings constitutes the majority of the collection and covers NAMHC meetings from 1946-1960, including Joint Session meetings with other National Advisory Councils in 1950 and 1951. Materials are arranged chronologically, starting with minutes from 1946-1947 meetings that are not parsed into discrete sessions. The collection was originally housed in binders, and the division of meeting minutes materials into subcommittees or appendices often reflects the original binder tab organization system.
