Historical Note

The conference Theoretical Issues in AIDS Social Research -- Implications for the Future took place October 26-28, 1987, in Minneapolis, Minnesota and was co-hosted by the Minnesota Institute of Family Dynamics (MIFD). About 50 people attended the invitation-only meetings featuring Bowen Theory family therapy practitioners and other subject experts. Around one third of the participants were associated with Murray Bowen, M.D., a psychiatrist and family therapist; one third were medical anthropologists; and one third were local experts with “front-line” experience working with persons with AIDS. Main topics of the conference included the psychological affects and treatment options for AIDS patients and their families.

The collection is arranged into three series, primarily based on form. Series 1: Conference Materials and Papers contains a narrative overview of the conference, a program and list of attendees, as well as copies of brief, formal papers that were presented at various panels. The original order of the materials as they were arranged in a binder is maintained. Series 2: Transcripts contains typed verbatim transcripts for the audiocassettes found in Series 3: Audiovisual Materials, and the final series also contains VHS videocassettes of the conference.
