Biographical Note

Dr. Robert H. Felix served as the first director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) from its inception in 1949 until 1964. Dr. Felix (1904-1990) began working in the Public Health Service in 1933 and by 1944 was chief of the mental hygiene division of the Bureau of Medical Services, a predecessor to the NIMH. He was a major proponent of the Mental Health Act of 1946, which created the NIMH.
