Historical Note

The Academy was founded in 1935 for the advancement of the science and art of medicine and to promote the exchange of knowledge between medical and other scientific groups. Dr. Earl Baldwin McKinley, of the George Washington University School of Medicine, is recognized as its founder. More recently it has become involved in the local D.C. medical school community by sponsoring an annual essay contest on the subject of bioethics. The Academy is a diverse group of physicians, admitting women to its membership in 1981.
