Historical Note

The U.S. Army established Fort Bayard in 1866 and conducted it until 1898. After the Spanish- American War, it was transferred to the Medical Department of the Army and became a U.S. Army General Hospital specializing in the treatment of military tuberculosis patients. Located in southwest New Mexico, Fort Bayard's location was considered particularly suitable to tuberculosis treatment for its altitude and temperate climate.
