Collection Summary

In the 1980s the National Library of Medicine began a program of acquiring copies of the correspondence of John Shaw Billings located in other repositories. Correspondence (6 items) from the American Library Association Archives at the University of Illinois dates from 1898-1912. Letters in the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia (17 items) date from 1862 to 1899; most are with Joseph Leidy and concern the identification of parasites, fungi,... and entozoa. Correspondence from 1884 to 1887 with Henry A. Ward was copied from the University of Rochester Library, and concerns primarily the acquisition of specimens for the Army Medical Museum.
