Biographical Note

Born at Bar-sur-Seine, France, Achille Chereau attained a medical degree in Paris in 1841. He practiced in Paris, specializing in diseases of women. He was also a writer of history of medicine. Chereau wrote several articles about eminent doctors, about history of syphilis, about origins of medical writing, and on insects, particularly ants. He became an associate of the Academy of Medicine in Paris in 1876, and also served as librarian of the Faculte de medecine.

Collection Summary

Writings and printed matter relating to Achille Chereau's published works. Material pertains chiefly to medical history and chronology. Also includes two bound volumes: Collection of his writings, published as 'Éphémeérides médicales', 'Feuilleton', 'Bibliothéque', etc., principally in Union médicale, Paris (1866)--constituting a calendar of events in medical history for each day of the year; Moisson départementale, fenilletons, éphémérides médicales, etc.--a collection of his miscellaneous writings on medical chronology, history, etc., being principally clippings from the 'Union médicale' (1866) [See Index Catalog Series 1 and 2].
