Historical Note

In order to better enforce public health laws and regulations, the National Conference of State Boards of Health was established in 1884 in Washington, D.C. In 1897, the organization's scope was expanded to include representatives in Canada and Mexico and its name changed to the Conference of State and Provincial Health Authorities of North America. Beginning in 1935 the conference shared its meeting with the Surgeon General of the Public Health Service, the Chief of the Children's Bureau, and the State and Territorial Health Officials.
