Biographical Note

William Darlington (1782-1863) was born at Birmingham, Pennsylvania. He began studying medicine under Dr. John Vaughan at Wilmington, Delaware about 1802. Darlington also attended medical lectures at University of Pennsylvania and received his M.D. degree in 1804. Immediately thereafter he was employed as a physician at Chester County (Pennsylvania) alms house. He joined the Pennsylvania volunteers to defend Philadelphia in the War of 1812. He was... a congressional representative three times from 1814 to 1822 and first president of the Chester County Medical Society (1828-52). Darlington spent his entire professional career in Chester County, Pennsylvania and was well known as a linguist and botanist.
