Biographical/Historical Note
Lemuel Whittington Gorham was born in Albany, New York. He graduated from Yale University and earned his M.D. at Johns Hopkins University. He joined the Albany Medical College as an instructor and achieved positions of Physician-in-Chief of Albany Hospital and Director of the Department and Professor of Medicine at the College. Upon his retirement in 1951, Gorham assumed directorship of the Publich Health Research Institute of New York City. During his career he authored many articles and was an active member in numerous medical societies, including the American Clinical and Climatological Association, of which he was president in 1936.
