Biographical Note

Maus was trained at the University of Maryland Medical School. He joined the Army as Assistant Surgeon in 1874. He initially served in the Department of the South and the Department of Dakota, then from 1881 to 1898 he served at posts throughout the U.S. During the Spanish American War, Maus was sent to both Cuba and the Philippines. As president of the Board of Health of Manila, he was credited with eradicating a breakout of bubonic plague in 1902. Maus retired from the army in 1915.

He authored the monograph An army officer on leave in Japan including a sketch of Manila and environment, Philippine insurrection of 1896-7, Dewey's battle of Manila Bay and a description of Formosa (1911).
