Historical Note
War Department General Order no. 1 for 1904 required "every staff corps and department, regiment, battalion not forming part of a regiment, and independent troop, battery, or company" to keep "a detailed history of the services of the organization. This history will, at all times, be kept as nearly up to date as possible."
