Biographical Note

Charles S. D. Fessenden, 1828-1896, was surgeon in charge at the U.S. Marine Hospital, Portland, Me. Born in Portland, he graduated from Bowdoin College and Brunswick Medical School. His brother was William Pitt Fessenden, 1806-1869, a senator from Maine and Secretary of the Treasury. Charles joined the Marine Hospital Service in 1861, eventually serving in Maine, New York, Louisiana, and Alabama.

Many of the letters are signed by John M. Woodworth, supervising surgeon general of the Marine Hospital Service, and Secretaries of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch, George S. Boutwell, William A. Richardson, Benjamin H. Bristow, and Lot M. Morrill.
