Biographical Note

Born at Portsmouth, Virginia on September 11, 1901, William Henry Sebrell, Jr. received his medical education at the University of Virginia's School of Medicine. He joined the U.S. Public Health Service in 1925 as an Assistant Surgeon and was posted in Boston and New York marine hospitals. In 1928 he began his career's work studying nutrition at the National Institute of Health. He served as chief of NIH's Divisions of Chemotherappy and Physiology from 1940 to 1947. In 1947 Sebrell became director of the Experimental Biology and Medicine Institute, a position he held until his appointment as director of the National Institutes of Health in 1950. In 1955 he retired from the Public Health Service but remained active as a research consultant to the American Cancer Society.

Collection Summary

Consists of correspondence, diaries, clippings, certificates and diplomas. A sizable portion of the collection relates to the period when Dr. Sebrell was director of the National Institutes of Health.
