Lewis Steiner (1827-1892) was born in Frederick, MD. He received his M.D. degree in 1849. From 1852 to 1860 Steiner taught chemistry at George Washington University. He was chief inspector of the United States Sanitary Commission in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War and served as president of the American Academy of Medicine in 1877.
Among his published writings are Paracelsus and his influence on chemistry and medicine (1853), Report on... strychnia; its physiological properties and chemical detection (1856), Human body and disease, considered from the Christian standpoint (1858) and Sketch of the history, plan of organization and operations of the U.S. Sanitary Commission (1866).
