Biographical Note

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1845, Robert King Stone practiced general medicine in Washington, D.C. In February 1857 a mysterious intestinal illness struck visitors to the National Hotel in Washington. The Washington, D.C. Board of Health appointed a committee to determine the causes. A member of the board but not of the investigating committee, Stone nevertheless undertook his own inquiry.

Collection Summary

Contains letters and clippings from physicians and from occupants of the National Hotel. Correspondents include Paul F. Eve, Augustus G. Gardner, Charles T. Jackson, Charles A. Lee, Valentine Mott, David B. Reid, Edwin M. Snow, Lewis H. Steiner, John Ware, and George B. Wood. Includes a letter from Stone to Dr. Cornelius Boyle (4 p.) reprinted from the National Intelligencer, Apr. 1857.
