Abstract

Dr. Frank Horsfall was a microbiologist with the Rockefeller Hospital from 1934 to 1960, after which he became Director of the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research until his death in 1971. Collection contains correspondence, diaries, memoranda, drafts of articles, laboratory studies and notes, reprints, printed matter, and photos.

His papers contain a wealth of primary source research materials and scientific data related to: environmental and industrial hygiene; radon activity; use of beryllium as a rocket propellant; uranium mining; and toxicological, biological and chemical weapon systems.

Stanton's early work at the National Cancer Institute was on chemically-induced carcinogenesis, after which he shifted to viral oncology. His last years were spent working on fiber carcinogenesis, and in particular on the carcinogenic effect of asbestos.

Samuel S. Epstein devoted his career to the study and identification of carcinogenic mechanisms in industrial pollutants, pesticides, cosmetics, food, as well as the entire range of environmental contaminants. He used his knowledge and experience to warn the public of risk, to advocate for regulation, to encourage cancer prevention measures, and to serve as an expert witness on the public's behalf on issues of toxic contamination and disease.
