Biographical Note

James Webster (1803-1854) was born in England and emigrated with his family to the United States. Webster received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1824. Shortly thereafter he undertook employment as a private instructor in anatomy in Philadelphia. He relocated to New York City in the mid-1830s and acquired a reputation as a skilled surgeon, particularly for conditions of the eye and ear. Dr. Webster was appointed Professor of Anatomy at the Rochester, N.Y.'s Geneva Medical College in 1842, where he remained until 1849 when he was elected Chair of Anatomy at the University of Buffalo. He died of heart disease in 1854.
