In mid-1984, DeVries joined Allan Lansing's team at the Humana Heart Institute International (HHII) as a Physician Consultant in Cardiovascular Surgery. He continued his total artificial heart (TAH) research at this institute until his resignation in 1988 to begin his own private practice.
