Biographical Note

Charles Henry Stevens (1927-2015) served on the Navy hospital ship USS Repose as a Pharmacist’s Mate First Class during World War II and later served in the Korean War. As a civilian, he fought to repeal the US military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, and he was active in the Atlanta, Georgia LGBTQ community as a member of the American Veterans for Equal Rights and the Atlanta Prime Timers. Scope and content

The bulk of the collection consists of photographs ca. 1945 of the USS Repose and of Charles Henry Stevens as a Pharmacist’s Mate First Class. Items in Series 1: Photographs are loosely arranged by topic and described at the item-level. The materials in Series 2: Other Materials consist of printed materials, including Post Yarns booklets and a 1946 issue of the Repose Review, as well as Stevens’ Pharmacist’s Mate Uniform Insignia and dog tag. The collection was featured in a 2015 Circulating Now article “A Pharmacist’s Mate First Class” by archivist John Rees.
