Biographical Note

Jean-Martin Charcot, 1825-1893, was an influential figure in the development of the fields of neurology and psychology. He taught medicine for 33 years at and was director of Paris' Salpetriere Hospital. In 1882 he founded Europe's first neurological clinic at Salpetriere. His special interest was hysteria, which he considered neurological in origin and studied by pioneering the use of hypnosis in the medical setting.
