Biographical Note
Pioneer neurosurgeon Dr. Harvey Cushing, 1869-1939, completed his career at his undergraduate alma mater as Yale's Sterling Professor of Surgery and Director of Studies in the History of Medicine. Dr. Cushing was also an historian of medicine and amassed a sizeable private collection of historically significant reference material. He campaigned for Yale to establish a medical library, which it did in 1941. Cushing's personal collection, donated to the library after his death, formed much of the nascent library's historical section.
